Senior Winner of the Young Artist Competition 2006

Andrea Jarrett

Andrea Jarrett is this year’s Senior Winner of the Young Artist Competition in the Instrumental Division. She will perform with the BBSO in the concert on January 21, 2007.

Andrea Jarrett is 15 years old and a sophomore at Saline High School. She has been playing the violin since the age of three and is currently a student of Anna Bittar Weller of Ann Arbor. She also makes frequent trips to Chicago to study with Almita and Roland Vamos. In April of 2006 Andrea was selected by Interlochen Arts Camp as its Emerson Scholar from the state of Michigan. This merit-based scholarship is one of the most prestigious offerings at Interlochen and she was awarded full tuition for the six-week summer session. While at camp she was accepted into Interlochen’s World Youth Symphony Orchestra (WYSO) under the musical direction of Jung-Ho Pak, and was concertmaster for both the opening and closing concerts. It was a thrill for her to meet both Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg and Van Cliburn when WYSO accompanied their guest performances. In previous summers at Interlochen, Andrea won the Intermediate Concerto Competition (2005) and the Junior Concerto Competition (2003).

Andrea was named third-place winner in the Junior Division of the 2006 Michigan Music Teachers Association (MMTA) Concerto Competition. In 2005 she won first-prize in the Youth Music Competition sponsored by the Ann Arbor Society for Musical Arts. In addition, she was a featured soloist with the Toledo Symphony Orchestra in March 2005 as a first-place winner in their Young Artist Competition.

A
ndrea is a member of the Saline High School Chamber Orchestra, and is co-concertmaster of the Michigan Youth Symphony Orchestra in Ann Arbor. In addition to performing her solo repertoire and participating in orchestra, Andrea enjoys performing in chamber ensembles and composing music.
