Julia C. Kurtyka Children’s Education Fund
In memory of long-time BBSO musician and supporter Julia C. Kurtyka, the BBSO has created the BBSO-Julia C Kurtyka Children’s Education Fund. All proceeds of this fund go directly towards the promotion of music education in our community supporting Ms. Kurtyka’s lifelong commitment to building the next generation of musicians.
In May 2012, the BBSO began this partnership with Birmingham Schools to launch a new middle school chamber music engagement program. This now annual program provides a BBSO string quintet for in-school activates that include sectional rehearsals for students in the String Orchestra, followed by an evening performance with the youth string student quartets side-by-side with BBSO musicians. From 2012 to 2014, both students and musicians have been sharing the stage in this free concert. Performing side-by-side creates a unique learning experience and fosters positive engagement that supports the community’s offerings and the BBSO’s initiatives.
Spearheaded by Chairman of the BBSO Board, Rich Tropea, and Birmingham Schools music teacher, Erin Little, this first annual Derby Middle School Kurtyka education program was launched in 2012. Students worked with BBSO musicians and gave their free public performance at Groves High School. This now annual program engages middle school students of Derby Middle School in coaching and performance at Seaholm High School. Now in its fourth season, this program has more than doubled in size each year – engaging a constantly growing number of students.
Stay tuned for announcements on the annual concert at Seaholm High School.
