2010-2011 Concert Season
"For the Love of Music"

CONCERT A
"Beethoven's Eroica!"
Sunday, October 24, 2010 at 7:00 pm
Temple Beth El - 7400 Telegraph Rd, Bloomfield Hills

Our new season begins with three wonderful, but diverse classics. After a lively overture by Rossini, we jump into the early 20th century with a delightful ballet suite by Stravinsky based on music from the Baroque period. Not your usual Stravinsky, to say the least. The big ticket on this evening's program is an all-time favorite.... Beethoven's 3rd. So ahead of its time when written, it turned the musical world on its ear. It was originally dedicated to Napoleon, but Beethoven, in a rage, famously scratched out the dedication on the score when learning that Napoleon had declared himself Emperor. In this amazing work, Beethoven broke all the rules, and the era of the traditional classical symphony was over. It's surely one of the most engaging and exciting symphonies ever penned.

Gioacchino Rossini: Overture to La Cenerentola (Cinderella)

Igor Stravinsky: Suite from the Ballet Pulcinella

Ludwig von Beethoven: Symphony No. 3 in E-flat Major, Op. 55, Eroica

CONCERT B
"Between the Holidays Special - Dance the Year Away"
Wednesday, December 29, 2010 at 7:00 pm
Birmingham Groves High School Auditorium - 31301 Evergreen Rd, Beverly Hills

It's traditionally our audience's favorite concert of the year. "Between the Holidays" means the hustle and bustle is over and there's finally time to sit back and enjoy. What better way to celebrate the year's end than listening to great music with the BBSO. This concert is filled to the brim with great symphonic dance music including work by Dvorak, Khachaturian, Faure, Hardiman, Ravel, Smetana, Gould, Copland, and Stravinsky.

Antonin Dvořák: Two Slavonic Dances, Op. 46, Nos. 1 and 3

Gabriel Fauré: Pavane, Op. 50

Aram Khachaturian: Excerpts from the Ballet Spartacus

Maurice Ravel: Pavane pour une infante défunte

Ronan Hardiman: Lord of the Dance

Bed
řich Smetana: Three Dances from The Bartered Bride

Morton Gould: Pavanne, from American Symphonette No. 2

Aaron Copland: Three Dance Episodes from Rodeo

Igor Stravinsky: Berceuse (Lullaby) and Finale from The Firebird

CONCERT C
"A French Valentine"
Sunday, February 13, 2010 at 7:00 pm
Temple Israel - 5725 Walnut Lake Rd, West Bloomfield

This concert will surely put you in the Valentine mood. It's mostly French music - full of charm and vivid colors. This delightful evening boasts two very special musicians. John Thomas Dodson will be making his conducting debut with the BBSO. We also take this opportunity to re-introduce Caroline Goulding, now a true rising star in the musical world. She first appeared with the BBSO as a VERY young prodigy, and is now a soloist with an international career. This will be fun!

Albert Roussell: Le Marchand de sable qui passé (The Sandman)

W.A. Mozart: Violin Concerto No. 5 in A Major, K. 219

Claude Debussy: Petite Suite

Jules Massenet: Meditation from Thaďs

Maurice Ravel: Le Tombeau de Couperin

CONCERT D
"From the New World"
Sunday, April 17, 2011 at 7:00 pm
Birmingham Groves High School Auditorium - 20500 W. Thirteen Mile, Beverly Hills
Auditorium parking entrance off Evergreen Road

The BBSO's final concert will end on a "high note" with music from or about America. Copland's familiar fanfare puts us in the proper mood. Then we move to Massachusetts-born composer Hovahaness' Mysterious Mountain. Our BBSO Young Artist String Competition Winner Abigail Elder will then perform Concerto for Viola and Orchestra, Mvt. 1 by William Walton with the orchestra. The sesason ends with one of the most famous symphonies of all. When Czech composer Dvořák was living in the US, he truly missed his native land, and responded by writing his greatest symphony - a musical portrait of "the New World".

Aaron Copland: Fanfare for the Common Man

Alan Hovhaness: Symphony No. 2, Op. 132: Mysterious Mountain

William Walton: Concerto for Viola and Orchestra, Mvt. 1

Antonin Dvořák: Symphony No. 9 in E minor, Op. 95: From the New World
